What Is One Pearl Jewellery Piece Really Worth?

How to judge value — not just price — when buying pearl jewellery in India
When you pick up a pearl earring or a pearl pendant, it can be hard to know if you are getting good value. The price tag alone does not tell the full story. Two pearl earrings both priced at Rs. 800 can be completely different in terms of how long they last, how good they look, and whether they feel worth wearing every day.
Here is how to think about value when buying pearl jewellery — whether from Kansya or anywhere else.
The Base Metal Matters More Than Most People Realise
Most pearl jewellery in the affordable Indian market uses one of three base metals: plastic, white metal or alloy, or brass. Plastic is the lightest and cheapest. White metal alloys vary — some are decent, many are not. Brass is the best option in this price range. It is denser, takes plating properly, and lasts far longer with basic care.
All of Kansya's pieces are built on a brass base. This is a conscious choice — brass is part of India's craft history, and it gives our pieces a weight and quality that you can feel immediately. See this in action across our rings collection, our bangles, and our bracelets.
The Plating Quality
Gold plating is what gives brass jewellery its colour and protects it from tarnishing. Thin plating chips off quickly — especially around edges, clasps, and high-contact areas. Good plating is thicker, more even, and holds its colour longer.
Our pieces use 18K rhodium gold plating, applied by skilled artisans. We do not cut corners here because it is what determines how the piece looks after six months of regular wear — not just when it is brand new.
The Faux Pearl Quality
Faux pearls used in jewellery vary significantly. Low-quality ones are uneven in shape, have a plasticky sheen, and the coating can rub off quickly. Better quality faux pearls have a consistent off-white or cream lustre, a smooth surface, and a coating that is properly bonded to the bead.
At Kansya, we source faux pearls for their lustre and durability under real-world wear. Our Evil Eye Ring with Pearl and Brass Ring are good examples of this — the pearl accent is the centrepiece of the design, so we choose it carefully.
The Craftsmanship
A handmade piece takes more time than a machine-made one — and that time shows. At Kansya, each piece is made by hand in Kolkata. The pearl setting is done by a person, not a mould. The clasp is fitted individually. Small imperfections are caught and corrected before the piece leaves our studio.
This is what you are paying for when you spend Rs. 600 to Rs. 1,500 on a Kansya piece. Browse our new arrivals to see our latest handcrafted designs, or check our pearl collection for the full pearl range.
How to Judge Value Before You Buy
-> Look at the base metal — brass is best in this price range.
-> Ask about the plating — 18K gold or rhodium plating outlasts cheaper alternatives.
-> Check if it is handmade — factory-produced pieces cut corners that handmade ones do not.
-> Read the product description carefully — at Kansya, every product page tells you exactly what the piece is made from.
